Home made sound absorption panels

This is a small guide to how to make some mid and high frequency sound absorption panels.

I have used some compressed insulation boards for these panels. The one I used is made for making "floating" floors and is quite hard and has a plastic film glued to one side of the board. These are 20mm thick, but other may be used. I have used black felt to cover these panels and soem strong good carpet tape to fasten the fabric to the panels.

Here is how i did it.

Cut the board into desired size. These are some 30 x 60 cm

I use felt to cover the panels, but other fabric may be used. Cut the fabric so it's some 15cm bigger then the panel. Place the panel on the felt with the plastic covered side facing up.

Put 2 strips of strong carpet tape on the full length of the panel so that when folding the fabric up and on to the backside of the panel, it will cover the carpet tape.

Remove the protective paper from the tape and fold the fabric up and onto the tape (Start at the middle of the panel) And stretch the fabric when doing the other side to make the fabric tight on the front of the panel.

To make the end folding of the fabric look good, I found out that if I cut away the fabric on the top, made some pointy bits of the side part and a trapes shaped cut of the bottom part, it could be folded onto the backside of the panel and still look good. I tried doing it in other ways too, but the corners of the panels just got to bulky.

Fasten a piece of tape and cut it to fit the trapes shape of the fabric that will fold over it.

Fold the "bottom" part of the fabric up and tighten it and then glue it in place.

You may use a small nailgun to lock the fabric in place (if the insulation board is hard enough)

Repeat the above for the other end of the panel. Put a piece of tape on each end of the panel to fasten the panel to the wall.

One panel finised !

I have so far made 4 panels. and I feel the sound in my home theater already got better ! I will now make some bigger versions and also some bass trap. (Guide will follow for that too...)
